  7. Yesterday when I was young, the  taste of life was
  8. sweet as rain upon my tongue,
  9. I teased at life as if it were a foolish game,
  10. the way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame;
  11. The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things
  12. I planned I always built, alas, on weak and shifting sand;
  13. I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day,
  14. and only now I see how the years ran away.
  15. Yesterday when I was young, so many drinking songs
  16. were waiting to be sung, so many wayward pleasures 
  17. lay in store for me, and so much pain
  18. my dazzled eyes refused to see.
  19. I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out,
  20. I never stopped to think what life was all about,
  21. and ev'ry conversation I can now recall concerned
  22. itselfe with me and nothing else at all.

  24. Yesterday the moon was blue and ev'ry crazy day 
  25. brought something new to do,
  26. I used my magic age as if it were a wand, 
  27. and never saw the waste and emptiness beyond;
  28. the game of love I played with arrogance and pride,
  29. and ev'ry flame I lit to quickly, quickly died;
  30. The friends I made all seemed some how to drift away,
  31. and only I am left on stage to end the play.
  32. There are so many songs in me that won't be sung,
  33. I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue,
  34. the time has come for me to pay for yesterday when I was young.
